As technical experts we do have face for critical technical incidents frequently. Most important thing is how to face them and succeed, because most of the time techies use to fail on such situations due to many reasons. I'm not going to talk about the failure reasons, we had to face a similar situation during last week and we end-up with a great success, so I'm going to share some key success factors to win a situation like that.Group in a room with a whiteboard and a phone. The team should consist with candidates with different talent and expertise. Two to three domain experts required and the team should be smart and getting things done. Attitude should be do what ever to make it happen.
This team should be away from the outside world and a room with a door will be ideal. New people can bring to the team time to time but the core team should exist from the beginning to end.
All ways there should be a plan and it should be visible. Plan should contain options by considering all possible combinations. Plan should review frequently, update and communicate to all the stakeholders. Running out of options is the most critical thing in such situation so always need to keep backup plans.
Team should take regular breaks and regather in a defined time. Time is a critical fact so the team should save time by ordering food to the place and get support of the external resources to handle non technical needs.
Few people of the team should read manuals, specifications related the technical issue and look at the fundamentals. Simulating the exact issue similar to the environment that the problem occurred will be lead to find a quick solution.
Team can reorganize into smaller groups and work on parallel paths rejoin and share the output. Results should be put visible to make accurate decisions.
There should be leader who will not panic and not pressure the team. May be can keep two leaders one for technical and one for operational or management.
Doing a postmortem will help to face such situation in a better shape in future.
